Batteries inspired to fly
Active work on profile innovative projects is one of our main tasks. On the basis of the laboratory located in the Skolkovo innovation center this case was developed. The main task was to provide the aircraft with a high-power and safe battery, allowing to be in the air for at least 3 minutes. For the power Cell team, this has become a kind of challenge. Currents return to the battery exceeds its operating capacity of approximately 15-20 times. The heating speed of the element at such capacities is expected to be very high and very fast.
'The total power of lifting engines of aircraft is 360 kW. For comparison, a Mercedes C63 AMG 457 horsepower, and it is 336 kW! However, we are not afraid: the challenges are our tasks' , - Alexander Loginov, General Director of Energoelement.
At the first stage, the selection of elements was carried out. Initially, the choice was made in favor of the element from Sone VTC6, which came to replace the earlier technology VTC5. However, after calculations, this element revealed not enough low internal resistance. Based on this, the constant discharge power will be insufficient. The question of the protection of this element arose. Despite the fact that it has a very high working capacity of 3000 mAh, in this case it did not fit.

We have offered our way in the selection of the battery. The basis of the estimated parameters was taken as the parameter constant power discharge instead of peak. According to the obtained data, elements in the composition of electrodes which include manganese oxide have high rates. A little-known element was selected, giving a slightly smaller working capacity, only 2800 mA*h, but having a mad constant discharge current of 40A. Using this element, you can achieve a win of 20% by weight of all elements and almost double the gain in price.

The second stage of the work will be direct testing for load and Assembly of elements into modules. The research was carried out in cooperation with Skolkovo developers Formula Hoversurf on the basis of the first domestic hoverbike Scorpion 1. Scorpion 1 is an electric cargo quadcopter with a seat for the pilot. The capacity of demonstration models of up to 100 pounds, however, already designed devices, lifting into the air over 300 pounds.

Now the team of creators is working to solve the problem of flight range. Hoversurf develops a hybrid system using conventional gasoline, which will allow to fly at a distance of about 300 km.

The market for unmanned aerial vehicles is growing rapidly. In the future, the use of such devices not only for the transportation of goods, but also for the movement of people. And a power cell will make its undeniable contribution to aircraft nanofuture.
